Review Friday: WD-40

WD-40 is incredible stuff. It should be part of every persons toolkit (I was going to say man, but some women have toolkits).

(I figured people would get bored of video games, so I’m looking at random things. Last week a bus, this week a lubricant. Fear not, probably a video game review next week! If anyone has any suggestions just leave a comment.)

Here comes the obligatory picture:

For those who aren’t familiar with WD-40, it’s a lubricant and solvent that comes in an aerosol can. It has many uses, as listed on the can in the image above. The WD40 Company list 2000 uses on their website here [PDF, WD40.com]. Some suggested uses include preventing missiles rusting, loosening nuts and screws and cleaning residue off stuff. It also dissolves cocaine.

Lifehack.org rated it the number 3 tool of all time [lifehack.org] behind Duct tape and vice grips.

As I was saying everyone should have a can. Maybe even two. It’s the perfect compliment to the duct tape and hammer (other elements of the toolbox).

The trifecta (hammer, WD-40 and duct tape) allows a person to conduct any task. The WD-40 will get things moving if it isn’t and should be. The duct tape will stop things moving if they shouldn’t be. And of course the hammer if either fail, but it’s likely to damage stuff. (Yes, I stole this idea of a toolkit from various engineers. But it’s true and it works.)

Pros

  • Cheap
  • Useful

Cons

  • Damages the environment
  • Prolonged contact is harmful to people

So there you have it. WD40.

Have a good Christmas (or whatever you celebrate).
